Art and charity are both driven by passion, a force strong enough to awaken the human spirit and institute change. We all strive for a better life for ourselves, our families, and our communities. If we each do our part, together we can make the world a better place. The following are a few organizations whose work I passionately support.

A good education has long been considered the key to success. Today, however, two-thirds of ninth graders will leave high school without the English and Math skills to handle college or land a job that can support a family. STAND UP is a community-based response to America's education crisis. It is a national campaign to mobilize all Americans to engage in the solution and demand policies that help all students succeed and give parents the tools they need to get their kids the education they deserve. STAND UP, through its partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is committed to raising the high school graduation rate and helping all
students, regardless of race or family income, graduate as strong citizens
ready for college and work.

EDUCATION: LOCAL SUPPORT
There are a number of ways to help support your local schools. The Gifted and Talented Education program (GATE), provides funding for local educational agencies to develop unique education opportunities for high-achieving and underachieving pupils in California elementary and secondary schools who have been identified as gifted and talented. GATE programs are operated in approximately 800 districts located in all 58 counties. Please contact your local school to inquire about GATE and to find out how you can help ensure California's bright young minds are kept engaged and challenged.

Heifer Project presents a unique, yet simple idea. Founded in 1944, this humanitarian assistance organization works to end world hunger and protect the earth, by giving families a source of food rather than short-term relief. Heifer helps build strong communities because each project participant agrees to pass on the gift of animal offspring, training, or skills to another family in need. To date, Heifer has helped millions of families in 128 countries by giving them the gift of self-reliance and hope.
